Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell is at Sandgate Cemetery.

103 years ago today, on the Monday evening of the 2nd October 1916, the Merewether Oddfellows' (Star Of The Glebe Lodge) Roll of Honour was unveiled before a large number of members and visitors at the Glebe Methodist Church.

10 names had been inscribed of members of the lodge who had enlisted and were serving overseas, and we can assume many more names would have been inscribed during and after The Great War.

One of the names mentioned was reported as missing, and he is awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

Private Thomas Henry Allanson, 53rd Battalion, labourer from 95 Macquarie Street, Merewether, New South Wales, fell on the 19th July 1916 at the Battle of Fromelles, age 28.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 29th July 1887 to Thomas (died 1934) and Hannah (died 1948) Allanson, Thomas enlisted with the 1st Battalion August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

In the field for 3 weeks, Thomas, also known as Snowy, was Reported Missing in Action, France, 19.7.1916.

Mr Allanson’s name has been inscribed on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France. Memorial No 7.

He is also remembered on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Merewether Public School Roll of Honour, Merewether (Glebe) Methodist Church Roll of Honour and the Merewether Advance Football Club Roll of Honor.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription on his parent’s headstone, and I am unable to place a memorial cross, so I have placed poppies to honour their son’s supreme sacrifice. METHODIST 4-07. 7.

Younger brother James (Reg No-2333) also served 1st A.I.F.
Lest We Forget.
