Biography contributed by Robyn Golby

Bert Lawrence was listed as Albert Henry Smith on his Birth Certificate, he changed his name to Bert Lawrence, which was his mother's married name from her first marriage (I don't know if he legally changed his name). He served in WWI at Gallipoli in the 1st Light Horse, 6th Reinforcements under the name Bertram Clarkson, Service No 1009. He embarked at Sydney on HMAT A65, "Clan McEwen" on 28 Jun 1915. He joined the AIF on 2 Feb 1915, next of kin is listed as A.M. Clarkson, father, of Tamworth NSW. He was discharged as MU (medical unfit) on 22 Nov 1918. War Medals - 1914/15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal.

I have a copy of his signed enlistment papers, in the name of Bertram Clarkson, also his original marriage certificate, in the name of Bert Lawrence. Both signatures were definitely signed by the same person.

He also served in WWII, Service Number N387968 in Volunteer Defence Corps. Enlisted 1 Jan 1942, discharged 22 Jan 1942. See www.ww2roll.gov.au.

I have the original Marriage Certificate of Bert Lawrence & Vera Jackson but in the space where the groom's father's name should be, there is a hole where the name has been rubbed out. Also other writing has been rubbed out on the bottom of the certificate. One thing the original does show is that Bert's father was a carpenter. I applied for a copy of the marriage certificate & this is when I found out that his father's name was Arthur Marshall Clarkson.
