Died on this date – 20th November…… Roderick James Keegan was born at Yulecart, Hamilton, Victoria in 1896.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 27th March, 1916 as a 19 year old, single, Coachbuilder from Mill Road, Hamilton, Victoria.

Private Roderick James Keegan, Service number 498, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 27th May, 1916 with the 10th Infantry Brigade, 39th Infantry Battalion, “B” Company & disembarked at Devonport, England on 18th July, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 23rd November, 1916 Private Keegan proceeded overseas to France.

Private Roderick James Keegan was wounded in action on 7th June, 1917. He was admitted to 12th Australian Field Ambulance on 7th June, 1917 – Gassed then transferred to same day to 9th Australian Field Ambulance. Private Keegan was discharged to duty on 14th June, 1917 & rejoined 39th Battalion in the Field on 15th June, 1917.

He was admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance on 17th July, 1917 with Pleurisy. Private Keegan was transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 17th July, 1917 then transferred to Ambulance Train 12 on 19th July, 1917. Private Keegan was admitted to 1st South African General Hospital at Abbeville, France on 19th July, 1917. He was marked for transfer to England on 15th August, 1917 & embarked on Hospital Ship St. Patrick on 16th August, 1917.

On 16th August, 1917 Private Keegan was admitted to Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, England. He was transferred to Military Hospital at Richmond on 6th November, 1917 then on 9th November, 1917 he was transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, Middlesex.

Private Roderick James Keegan died at 7.05 pm on 20th November, 1917 at 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield Park, Harefield, Middlesex, England from Tuberculosis of Lungs & (secondary) Exhaustion.

He was buried in St. Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Harefield, Middlesex, England where 112 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
