George Courtney was one of four sons of Edward and Grace Courtney of North Sydney, New South Wales, who enlisted in the AIF during World War One.

George’s younger brother, 3721 Pte. Robert Courtney 13th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres on 11 August 1916, aged 24.

Another younger brother, 6541 Pte. Raymond Courtney 19th Battalion AIF was later killed in action at Peronne in France on 29 August 1918, aged 22.

Lieutenant Frank Courtney 17th Battalion returned to Australia during March 1919.

His oldest brother, Ed "Tedda" Courtney was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer. He played representative football for the New South Wales state and Australian national sides.  He is considered one of Australia’s finest rugby league footballers. In 2008, Courtney was named in the list of Australia's 100 Greatest Players commissioned by the NRL and is in the NRL Hall of Fame.
