Hector had a traumatic amputation of the left Fore Arm when on the night of Feb 23 1944 while night flying at Southrop he was asked by his instructor to proceed to an aircraft and wait for him. When he got there he discovered his parachute was U.S. and returned to the flight to change it. In the meantime his instructor had proceeded to the aircraft. He was doubtful as to the identity of his Aircraft and proceeded to the nose to identify it. In his consquent haste not to keep his instructor waiting he was hit by the propellor and his foremarm was amputated.
