The son of James Tyrrell, of Lemborough Road, Buckingham, England. His mother had passed away in 1907. When he enlisted in January 1916 his younger brother 304 Pte. Fred Tyrrell 16th Battalion had already been killed in action a week after the Anzac landing on 2 May 1915, aged 30.
The two brothers had arrived in Western Australia during 1911. They both gave their address as Crystal Cafe, Hay Street, Perth, Western Australia, but it is thought that Fred worked on the goldfields at Kalgoorlie and Leonora.
Walter enlisted in the 44th Battalion but was transferred to the 28th Battalion when he arrived in France during January 1917. He was shot in the arm at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917 and evacuated to England. He returned to his unit in August 1917 and was killed in action during the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 1917.
