Stanley enlisted as a trainee Aircraft Engineer, first posted to training in Hobart, followed by postings to Aircraft Maintenance and Repair facilities at Sale, Ballarat, and Essendon, in Victoria.
As an Aircraft Engineer, no flying experience qualification was required, but in the early months of the war, flying experience was provided to familiarise engineers with enough skill to take-off and land an aircraft in the event of pilot incapacitation.
Just before the Pacific War ended he was posted overseas, to Morotai Island to the East of the Celebes Sea, in the Halmahera Island Group in Eastern Indonesia. This posting was cut short when the Japanese signed the unconditional surrender soon after.
