Biography contributed by Angus Gurry

Beaumont Jeffreys Philpott

Beaumont Jeffreys Philpott, also known as just Beaumont Philpott, was an ANZAC soldier of the first world war who served from the 29th of June, 1915 until his death on the 17th of June, 1916 of gas poisoning in Belgium. He served in the 25th Infantry Battalion during the first world war, leaving Brisbane on the 29th of June, 1915 aboard HMAT Aeneas, owned by the Ocean SS Co Ltd, Liverpool. After less than two months training in Cairo, Egypt, Philpott’s battalion left to fight on the Ottoman front on 04 September 1915, reinforcing the depleted ANZAC forces.

Although arriving after the last major allied offensive there was still may violent months ahead. Gallipoli was evacuated on the 18th of December 1915, two days before the last of the men left. The 25th then returned to Egypt and spent another two months training. At the start of March, the 25th, along with numerous other divisions that had served in Gallipoli left for the western front. Beaumont was killed by poisoness gas in Belgium a month before his Battalion took part in the disasterous major battle at Pozieres between 25 July and 7 August, in the course of which it suffered 785 casualties.

After a spell in a quieter sector of the front in Belgium, the 2nd Division came south in October to attack again in the Somme Valley. The 25th Battalion took part in two attacks to the east of Flers, both of which floundered in the mud. Although it acted in a supporting role at the second battle of Bullecourt, the 25th Battalion did not carry out a major offensive role again until 20 September 1917, when it was part of the 2nd Division's first wave at the battle of Menin Road.

While not much is known about Philpott, he is known to have been born in 1890 in India before moving to Townsville, Queensland, making him just 26 years old when he was killed in Belgium. From his enlistment date, it can be established that he was a regular civilian before the first world war, when he decided to join the AIF.

Beaumont Jeffreys Philpott is buried in the Dranoutre Military Cemetery in Flanders, Belgium and also panel 105 in the commemorative area of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
