Service
On 7th November 1942, James enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force for service during the Second World War, then ominously close to Australia's northern coast.
He was allocated to the No.4 Mobile Works Squadron as an electrical mechanic, which was later re-named No.4 Airfield Construction Squadron, and was involved in constructing and maintaining forward airfields, runways and support infrastructure in Papua, New Guinea (then two separate Australian Territories) and Borneo.
In September 1944 he was posted to No.2 Aircraft Depot, Richmond, for three months. He was discharged with the rank of Leading Aircraftman on 21st December 1945, following war's end.
For his war service James was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star, Defense Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Australia Service Medal 1939-1945 and Returned from Active Service Badge
