Warrant Officer Eric Albert Kenneth Stobie (Service No:3466) initially served in the Militia (Private; Service No:188412) with 37/52 Battalion from 25 September 1930 to 1 November 1932. He enlisted in the RAAF on 6 June 1938 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Fitter General and later re mustered as Fitter Works (special qualifications as constructional engineer) at RAAF Training Depot Laverton (Vic). By 1 April 1943 he had been appointed Warrant Officer, attached to 8 Mobile Works Squadron (MWS) and 1 MRU. Warrant Officer Stobie was attached to 7 Airfield Construction Squadron (ACS) at Discharge on 7 June 1946. Brothers Aubrey and Raymond also served in WWII.
Eric was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1912, second of five children of Albert Aurelius Stobie (b1888 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Victoria (Lily) Lillian Laughton (b1887 in Melbourne, Victoria). Albert (a Clerk) and Lily married in 1908 in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Albert was a Clerk and Bookkeeper - and performed as a Comdeian (radio and theatre) under the stage name Fred Champion.
Eric completed his studies at Caulfield Technical School in Melbourne, and worked as a Moter Mechanic for Phoenix Motors. In 1935 in Melbourne he married Amy Laurel McKee (b1910 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Amy was workng as a Binder in Melbourne. Eric and Amy settled in Melbourne, where Eric was an Engineer with McIntosh Engineers in 1938 when he enlisted in the RAAF. Following his Discharge, Eric and Amy lived in Melbourne (Laverton) where they raised their children and Eric worked as an Engineer. In the late 1950s Eric and Amy separated - Amy remained in Laverton and Eric lived in the Melbourne CBD, where he worked as an Engineer until retirement. Eric died in 1994 and Amy in 2003.
