William Horace was the seventh of eight children of John Wesley Bateman (born 1851 in Fremantle WA) and Maria (Mary) Teresa Armstrong (born a851 at Murray River, Ravensthorpe WA). William was a member of the Bateman family - pioneers who arrived in Fremantle in 1830.
William was working as a Mercantile Clerk when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. Initially a Private (Service No: 565) with 13th Depot Company, he transferred to 28 Battalion C coy and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 31 August 1915. William was KIA by a High Explosive Shell at Russell's Top, Anzac in 1916.
The Western Mail (21 January 1916) reports that William was ' a model soldier as well as a splendid shot with the rifle, and at the time of his death he had attained the rank of lance - corporal, having performed yeoman service in the trenches as well as some other good work as a sniper' (p 48).
William's brothers Vernon and Herbert Pearson also served in WWI, and brother - in - law Henry Kennedy Maley MLA served in the Boer War.
