Leading Aircraftman John Albert Witney (Service No:43314) enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman I on 17 July 1941 at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane - mustered as an Aircraft Hand - and attached to No 2 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) Archerfield. Through 1942 ACI Witney was attached to No 1 Bombing and Gunnery School (BAGS) Evans Head, No 2 School of Technical Training (STT) Canberra, No 1 Engineering School (ES) Ascot Vale, No 8 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Bundaberg, and No 4 School of Technical Training (STT) Adelaide - remusterd as Flight Mechanic. On 15 August 1943 he was promoted to Leading Aircraftman - remustered as Fitter and posted to No 3 Aircraft Depot (AD) Amberley. LAC Witney was attached to No 3 AD at Discharge on 18 December 1945. Jack was one of five siblings who served in WWII.

Born in Jeparit, Victoria in 1908, Jack was fifth of ten children of Walter William Witney (b1870 in Dimboola, Victoria) and Emelie (Millie) Pauline Miller (b1879 in Dimboola, Victoria). Walter (a Farmer) and Millie married in 1901 in Dimboola and lived in Jeparit, Dimboola and Warracknabeal where they raised their family and Walter was a Farmer.

Jack started working in Culgoa, Wycheproof, Victoria with two of his brothers and by 1941 was at St Ruth, Dalby, QLD where he worked as a Farm Hand and Wheat Grader. In his Attestation Papers, Jack stated he had fifteen years general farming experience and two years as a Garage Assistant. Following his Discharge, Jack returned to Dalby where he was working as a Labourer in 1958 when he married Barbara Mary Nicols (b1933 in Surrey, England) - Barbara was a Children's Nanny when she immigrated in 1956, arriving in Adelaide, South Australia on board the Straithaird. Jack and Barbara settled at Jandowae via Dalby before moving to Yandina nr Nambour, QLD in the mid 1970's. Jack died in 1980.
