Allan, born in Perth, Western Australia, was a marvellous character actor and appeared in many British films after WW2 as a reserved, cultured and somewhat stuffy Englishman. He served in 111 Air Sea Rescue Flight during WW2 and his commanding officer wrote in his record on 19 June 1945, "Flight Lieutenant Cuthbertson has a rather formal manner and on first meeting would appear to be 'stand-offish'. This is not so in fact, however, and he is always eager to do any job which he may be offered."
