Died on this date – 20th July…… Albert Edward Rycen was born at Muttaburra, Queensland on 22nd June, 1897.

Mary Elizabeth Rycen, mother of Albert Edward Rycen, died on 5th October, 1899.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 26th November, 1915 as an 18 year old, single, Labourer from Muttaburra, Queensland.

Private Albert Rycen, Service number 2386, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 31st March, 1916 with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, 16th Reinforcements.

He was taken on strength with 1st Light Horse Regiment on 5th May, 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir.

On 15th May, 1916 Private Rycen was transferred to Artillery Details. His rank was changed to Gunner.

Gunner Albert Rycen embarked at Alexandria, Egypt on H.M.T. Corsican & disembarked at Plymouth, England (no date recorded).

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 14th July, 1916 Gunner Rycen was admitted to Hospital at Tidworth, Wiltshire with Cerebro Spinal Fever. He was reported dangerously ill with Cerebro Spinal Fever on 15th July, 1916.

 

Gunner Albert Edward Rycen died at 6.20 p.m. on 20th July, 1916 at Lucknow Isolation Hospital, Tidworth* from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis. (*Note – Some of the Army forms state place of death as Bulford Hospital, Bulford, however the Admissions to Hospital form states name of Hospital as Tidworth. The “Report of a Soldier” Army Form B. 2090 has place of death as Tidworth Hospital. The “Morning State of Sick – Army Form A. 27 has the place of death as Lucknow Isolation Hospital, Tidworth (Ward in Military Hospital Tidworth) & also has the incorrect date as 21st July, 1916.)

He was buried in Bulford Church Cemetery, Wiltshire where 14 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
