Died on this date – 6th October…… Private William Walder was born at Alexandria, Sydney, NSW in 1899. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 21st October, 1915 stating he was an 18 year old, single, Labourer from Waterloo, Sydney, NSW.

As William Walder was under the age of 21 years, his parents needed to sign their consent for their son to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force for active service abroad. Ernest & Elizabeth Walder both signed their consent. (Note – William Walder was actually 16 years old when he enlisted.)

Private William Walder embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8th March, 1916 with the 17th Infantry Battalion, 10th Reinforcements & disembarked at Alexandria. He embarked from Alexandria on HMT Megantic on 28th May, 1916 & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 7th June, 1916.

Private Walder proceeded to France from England on 5th September, 1916 & joined 17th Battalion in Belgium on 15th September, 1916. He was admitted to Hospital on 23rd September, 1916 with Trench feet & was transferred to England & admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital, Chichester, England on 3rd October, 1916. Private Walder was transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, England on 17th October, 1916. He was discharged on 3rd November, 1916 to furlo until 18th November, 1916 & was then report to Perham Downs.

Private Walder was absent without leave from No. 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, Wiltshire from 3.30pm till midnight on 18th November, 1916. He was awarded 7 days Confined to Camp & forfeited 1 days’ pay.

Private Walder was transferred to No. 4 Command Depot at Wareham, Dorset on 22nd November, 1916. He was admitted to Military Hospital at Woking on 23rd December, 1916 with Bronchitis (slight).

Private Walder was absent without leave from No. 4 Command Depot at Wareham from 8.30 am on 12th January, 1917 till 10.40 pm on 17th January, 1917 (6 days) & (2) Neglecting to obey orders re train travelling. He was awarded 6 days Confined to Barracks & forfeited 6 days’ pay.

Private Walder was transferred to Drafting Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire on 23rd February, 1917. He proceeded overseas to France on 15th March, 1917 & rejoined his Battalion in France on 9th April, 1917.

Private William Walder was wounded in action in the Field on 20th September, 1917. He was admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance on 20th September, 1917 with shrapnel wounds to shoulder & thigh. He was transferred & admitted to 16th USA General Hospital at Le Treport on 21st September, 1917.

Private Walder was transferred to 3rd Convalescent Depot at Le Treport on 15th October, 1917 & discharged the same day to Base Details. He rejoined 17th Battalion in France on 2nd November, 1917
Private Walder was admitted to Field Ambulance on 10th November, 1917 with Orchitis. He rejoined his Battalion on 3rd December, 1917.

Private Walder was admitted to Field Ambulance on 15th December 1917 with P.U.O. (pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin). He was transferred to Casualty Clearing Station then on to 26th General Hospital at Etaples, France. Private Walder embarked on Hospital Ship on 9th January, 1918 for England & was admitted to Fusehill War Hospital, Carlisle, Cumberland, England on 9th January, 1918 with Rheumatic Fever.

Private Walder was reported to be dangerously ill on 30th May, 1918. His father was notified on 6th June, 1918 that Private Walder was seriously ill then on 10th June, 1918 that Private Walder’s condition was improving. On 24th June, 1918 he was advised that Private Walder was dangerously ill. He was advised on 3rd July, 1918 that Private Walder’s condition was improving. Mr E. Walder was advised on 30th July, 1918 that Private Walder’s condition was stationary on 10th July, after a relapse.

Private William Walder died at 4 pm on 6th October, 1918 at Fusehill War Hospital (Newtown Section), Carlisle, Cumberland, England from Rheumatic Fever.
He was buried on Dalston Road Cemetery, Carlisle, Cumberland, England where 1 other Australian WW1 Soldier is buried. Private Walder has a private headstone and his death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
