In September 1915 at the age of 25 he joined the AIF as a Private with the 28th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement (Reg Number 3108, AWM Embarkation Roll number 23/45/). Unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 18 January 1916. He rose to the rank of Sergeant with the 28th Battalion before being killed in action on the 10/01/1916. He serviced at the Western Front.
