DEATH OF REV. A. G. STODDART.
The Rev. Alfred George Stoddart, for 30 years rector of St. Matthew's Church of England, Manly, died on Tuesday night at the Rectory, Darley-road, Manly, at the age of 70 years. The late Mr. Stoddart was born In London, and came to Australia 46 years ago. Soon after his arrival he served at Kelso, and was incumbent at Ulladulla from 1881 to 1884. Mr. Stoddart was incumbent at Redfern from the latter year until 1891, and was acting organising secretary of the Church Society during 1880 and 1890. For a time he was editor of the "Australian Guardian," and in 1891 became incumbent of All Saints', Sutton Forest, with Moss Vale and Bundanoon. The late Mr. Stoddart was at Sutton Forest until 1894, when he became rector of St. Matthew's, Manly. He was clerical secretary of the Diocesan Synod from 1887 to 1910.
During the war Mr. Stoddart served as a chaplain with the Australian Imperial Force in Egypt and England and was extremely popular with officers and men. During the 30 years ho was rector of St. Matthew's,Manlj, Mr. Stoddart endeared himself to the parishioners.
The late Mr. Stoddart leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters. His sons, Selwyn and Noel, served with the A I F., and are now on the land In the Urbenville district. Two of the late Mr. Stoddart's daughters are in Brisbane, and the other Is Mrs. H. E. Harris, of Rosevllle, His eldest son, Captain Raymond Stoddart, died about six years ago.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at Manly Cemetery, after a short service at St. Matthew's Church.
