Trooper W. J. Varley, who was mentioned in despatches by Sir Ian Hamilton, is the son of Mr. W.A. Varley, Postal Inspector, Armidale. Born in Sydney 26 years ago, Trooper Varley was educated first at the Cleveland-street Superior Public School, and then at the Camden Grammar School. He was for some time a student at Wagga Experimental Farm, and afterwards acquired Noomaie, a property in the Bellingen district, where he resided for about six years, and which he disposed of last year. He left for the front with the 1st Australian Light Horse, in October, 1914. In a recent letter, written to his parents from the convalescent hospital, Epsom, Trooper Varley mentioned that he had been commended by the general for having carried despatches under great difficulties.
