Adam was the eldest child of Adam Turnbull Snr (b1887 in Durham, England) and Margaret (Maggie) Urwin (b1888 in Sunderland, Durham). Adam Snr (a Miner)and Maggie married in 1907 in Tynemouth, Northumberland and in 1914 Adam Snr enlisted in the British Army (Private; Regimental No:168512). He was WiA (GSW to knee) in France.

In December 1927 Adam a Coal Miner in Choppington, Northumberland when he left England, arriving in Brisbane QLD on board the Orvieto in February 1928. Adam settled in Ipswich QLD where he was a Coal Miner in 1937 when he married Mabel Fraser (b1911 in Ipswich, QLD). Adam and Mabel lived in Ipswich and Adam was a Coal Miner with three children when he enlisted in the RAAF in March 1942. Adam served as a Guard (Aircraftman I/Leading Aircraftman; Service No:44729) with HQ Townsville, 2 Airfield  Defence Sqaudron and 18 (NEI) Squadron. He was attahed to 2 Airfield Defence Squadron when he was Discharged in January 1946.

Adam returned to Ipswich, QLD where he worked as a Miner until his death in 1959. Mavis died in 1984.
