Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

Born Macclesfield to James Goble and Carolyne Harris.

James had a sister Amelia sponsored by Thomas Lemar to come out to South Australia. Thomas had married Marry-Anne Goble in Kent UK and lived near Macclesfield at a place called Paris Creek. It is not known if James had also been sponsored or simply followed his sisters?

James father (Herberts Grand Father ) John Atkins Goble had served at Waterloo with the 7th Hussars (as well as the Penisular Campaigns with the 13th Light Dragoons.

James was a local special police constable, pound keeper, Inn Licensee (Meadows) in the Macclesfied area. The family moved to Adelaide by 1884.

Herbert had spend his early years in Mulberry cottage - main street Macclesfield which still exists today.

Married Florence Pynn - they had 4 children Herbert Edward, Roy James, Leonard Joseph & Edma May. All were granted a pension on 27 Oct 2017 (along with wife Florence and Herbert himself).

By occupation he was a Jewellery.

Noticed on enlistement severe signs of wasting to arms and shoulders - possible due to occupation.

He was quite old to join an Infantry Battalion - being 46 when he entered active service with is his Company.

Upon being medically discharged he returned home.

His marriage with Florence  broke up 1 year before his passing in 1927 - and indications of alcohol issues. He was buried at West Terrace War Memorial - Adelaide.
