Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Two brothers who served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, died and laid to rest on the same days 9 years apart.

79 years ago today, on the Thursday morning of the 1st July 1943, Private Edwin Hugh Burwell, 23rd Battalion (Reg No-2342), ship’s steward from Christo Road, Waratah, New South Wales and Coomoo Coomoo Station, N.S.W. and Cherry Road, Warners Bay, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 64. ANGLICAN 1-12. 53.

Born at Manchester, United Kingdom on the 30th September 1879 (unconfirmed) to George and Grace Ada Burwell, Edwin enlisted July 1915 at Melbourne, Victoria.

Admitted to hospital 8.10.1916 (rheumatism), 26.10.1916 (myalgia).

Invalided to England 24.2.1917.

Edwin returned home July 1917, being discharged medically unfit (stricture, not caused by service - discharged at own request) on the 25th August 1917.

I have not located Mr. Burwell’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Edwin’s gravesite, but the headstone inscriptions are now unreadable, so I will place a cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

9 years later, older brother Private George Henry Burwell, 35th Battalion (Reg No-369), painter from Christo Road, Waratah, New South Wales and Cherry Road, Warners Bay, N.S.W. and Donald Street, Nelson Bay, N.S.W., believed to be a father of eight (born between 1899 and 1916 in N.S.W.), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the Tuesday afternoon of the 1st July 1952, age 80. ANGLICAN 2-118. 41.

Born at Madison, Wisconsin, United States (April? 1872, not confirmed) to George and Grace Ada Burwell; husband of Kathleen Leonora Burwell nee Bellenger (married 1897, Sydney, N.S.W., died 1926, sleeping here), George enlisted November 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

George returned home March 1918, being discharged medically unfit (overage, rheumatics) on the 3rd April 1918.

Mr. Burwell’s name has been inscribed on the Waratah-St Philip's Anglican Church Roll of Honour. Name not inscribed on the Lambton Park Citizens' Memorial Gates or the Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor or any known Lambton Roll of Honour.

I located George resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so October 2015 I placed a cross in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Recently placed poppies, new cross needed soon!

Mr. Burwell’s Honour and Dignity will be restored with a Plaque courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
