Arthur Henry Jeffery was a farm hand from Maylands, Western Australia, prior to enlistment. Born in England during 1900 he was at most 18 years of age when he died. He came out to Australia when he 14 years of age. Pte Jeffery was hospitalised in October 1917 due to accidental injuries received during training and rejoined his unit in early December. He was hospitalised a week later due to illness and rejoined his unit near Corbie, France, on 29 April 1918. Jeffery was accidentally killed during a training exercise on 6 May 1918, when a Mills bomb exploded and a piece of shrapnel struck him. He was buried nearby in the Pernois British Cemetery. His older brother, 1052 Lance Corporal William Thomas Jeffery, 28th Battalion, also from Maylands WA, initially served in Gallipoli and was subsequently killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 29 July 1916.
Their parents, William and Ellen Jane Jeffery of Rochester in England, received all of Arthur’s entitlements.
