Leading Aircraftman John Edward Hurley (Service No:156572) enlisted in the RAAF (after having been unsuccesful in enlisting in the RAN) on 26 July 1944 as an Aircraftman I at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne - mustered as General Hand. Promoted to LAC on 26 January 1945, he was attached to 7 Central Recovery Depot (CRD) at Discharge on 8 March 1946.
Jack was born in Mornington, Victoria in 1926, fourth of five children of George Albert Hurley (b1895 at Snapper Point, Victoria) and Amy Loxley Sinclair West (b1894 at Snapper Point, Victoria). George and Amy married in 1919 and settled in Mornington, where they raised their family and George worked as a Labourer until his death in 1928 - George was fishing with friends at Rosebud in Port Philip Bay when all four drowned.
Jack worked in Mornington as Grocer's Assistant on leaving school, and in 1944 was working for Clark & Pitt (Fuel and Fodder Merchants) as an Assistant when he enlisted in the RAAF. In 1945 in Mornington, Jack married Melva Anne Lane (b1928 in Melbourne, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Jack and Melva settled in Mornington, where they raised their family and Jack worked in a Plaster Factory and as a Presser until his death in 1973. Melva died in 2013.
