The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.
The 33rd name inscribed is Private Hewitt Poole Willoughby.
On the Tuesday afternoon of the 5th April 1949, the ashes were cremated at Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W. of Private Hewitt Poole Willoughby, 34th Battalion (Reg No-221), labourer from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, New South Wales and Sawyer Street, Paxton, N.S.W., age 58 years. Location of Ashes - Rose A 8/2.
Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 4th April 1891 to William Henry, died 24.8.1916, Kurri Kurri Hospital, N.S.W., age?, buried at Minmi Cemetery, Left Hand Side, Section 02 Plot 018, unmarked grave, and Margaret Ann Willoughby nee Banfield, died 29.12.1911, Minmi, N.S.W., age 63, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, Left Hand Side, Section 02 Plot 018, unmarked grave, from Newtown, Minmi, New South Wales; husband of Elizabeth Teresa Willoughby nee Pryor, married 1915, Minmi, N.S.W., died 21.9.1976, Paxton, N.S.W., age 81, mother of 2?
Hewitt enlisted on the 8th January 1916, age 24 years 9 months, at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.
Admitted to hospital 24.1.1917 (influenza & scabies).
Wounded in action - 7.5.1918 (GSW leg).
Commenced return to Australia 1.7.1919.
A report that Hewitt will be arriving home soon.
Hewitt arrived home on the 17th August 1919, being discharged on the 19th August 1919.
Not eligible for War Medals, automatically forfeited.
Not officially commemorated.
I would like to see poppies placed at Hewitt’s plaque in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
