Son of Peter Olaf Olsson and Mary Anne Letitia Olsson nee Humphrey of Hope Street, West Brunswick, Victoria.

Served his cutting apprenticeship with Robert Reed of Melbourne, Victoria 

On 6 August 1919 Frederick married Bessie Smith in St. Lukes Church, Paddington, London, England. Vicar  F. Barry Drew officiated

Commenced return to Australia on 21 December 1919 aboard HT Port Napier disembarking on 10 February 1920
