Leading Aircraftman Richard Michael Gibbons (Service No:17923) enlisted in the RAAF on 16 October 1940 and mustered as a Fitter. He was attached to 9 Elementary Flying Training School when he was Discharged on 3 July 1942 (Medically Unfit).
The third of five children, Richard was born in 1900 in Geraldton WA to Percy James Gibbons (b1870 in Norfolk, England) and Mary Ellen Morrissey (b1870 at Irwin, WA). Percy (a Stock Inspector) and Mary married in 1895 in Guildford WA. Percy worked for the Department of Agriculture as a Stock Inspector and the family lived in Dongara, Geraldton, Yalgoo, Wyndham, Fremantle and Narrogin.
Richard started work in Narrogin as a Mechanic's Apprentice (Narrogin Motor Garage) and in 1934 married Lorna Catherine Keyser (b1908 in Greenbushes, WA) - Lorna was a Nurse at the Children's Hospital in Subiaco. Richard and Lorna settled in Bunbury where Richard worked as a Radio and Electrical Salesman (Rural Motors Bunbury) and a Mechanic for Winterbottom Motor Coy. Richard died in Bunbury in 1950 and Lorna in 1953.
