Born in 1911 in Albion, Brisbane QLD, Harriet was the eldest of six children of George Frederick Coles (b1885 in Brisbane, QLD) and Sarah Jane Seel (b1888 in Toowoomba, QLD). George (a Labourer) and Sarah married in 1910 in Brisbane, QLD and by 1915 had settled in Toowoomba where they raised their family and George was a Labourer and Railways Employee. In May 1916 George had enlisted in the AIF but was Discharged a month later at his own request - he had enlisted following pressure from his two brothers, and was Discharged following a request from his wife who was in poor health with two small children (National Archives Australia).
In 1930 in Toowoomba QLD, Harried married David William Nethercote (b1906 in Ipswich, QLD). Harriet and David settled in Wynnum, Brisbane, QLD where David was a Labourer.
