Corporal Winsome Gwenyth Bancroft (9440) enlisted in the RAAF on 19 October 1941 as an Aircraftwoman I at No 4 Recruiting Centre - mustered as Clerk. Corporal Bancroft was attached to 5 Embarkation Depot at Discharge on 8 April 1943.

Born in 1920 in Wyalkatchem WA, Winn was sixth of seven children of Harold Stewart Bancroft (b1887 in Spring Hill, QLD) and Susan (Susie) Mary Hayden (b1891 in York, WA). Harold was a Carpenter when he came to Western Australia in the early 1900s, working in Southern Cross in 1906 and in York in 1909. Harold and Susie married in 1910 in York, WA and lived there and in Doodlakine, Wyalkatchem, Toodyay, Fremantle and Perth and Harold worked as a Carpenter.

Winn completed studies at Perth Technical  College, and in 1933 was Ladies' Champion at Nedlands Amateur Swimming Club. Winn was working in Perth as a Legal Stenographer in 1941 when she enlisted, and in 1942 in Perth WA married Captain Dominic (Nick) Smith (b1918 in Northam, WA; Service No:WX17134). Nick remained in the Army, and Winn and he lived in Perth, at Wallangarra via Stanthorpe, QLD and in Singapore. Winn died in 2004 and Nick in 2011.
