Flying Officer Frederick James Mortimer Hoad (Service No:265498) served in the RAAF from 30 March 1942 (when he enlisted at No 1 Recruting Centre Melbourne as an Aircraftman I) to 13 February 1943 (when his Appointment was Terminated on medical grounds). His father - Frederick James Sydney Hoad - served in the Army in three conflicts (Boer War and WWI and WWII).
Fred was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1905, youngest of two children of Frederick (Fred) James Sydney Hoad (b1883 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Clara (Louie) Louisa Louisa Lancaster (b1872 in Yorkshire, England) - Louie immigrated in 1880, arriving in Melbourne on board the Marpesia. Fred Snr (a Box Maker) and Louie (a Dressmaker) married in 1903 in Melbourne, and moved to Wellington, New Zealand, where Fred Snr worked as a Motor Man. In 1906 Fred Snr and Louie returned to Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Fred Snr worked as a Caretaker before joining the Victorian Government Railways (VGR) where he worked as a Shunter, Fitter and Clerk. Fred Snr served in the Boer War, in WWI (PoW of the Germans) and in WWII.
Fred was a Sales Manager with Brash & Coy in 1930 in Melbourne when he married his first wife Edna Alberta Thelma Victoria Stobie (b1909 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Edna was a Hairdresser. Fred and Edna settled in Melbourne, where Fred worked as Sales Manager for Werring Radio Coy, Superintendent with T&G Society and then Metro Life Insurance Coy. By 1933 he had to cease working due to Edna's increasing mental health issues. By 1935, Edna was hospitalised and Fred found employment in Sydney as a Salesman with T&G Society, then Hyslop Pty Ltd and York Motors Sydney. In 1939 Fred divorced Edna (who by then was committed to a mental institution), and was working in Sydney as a Business Manager and Partner of White Bay Car Sales and Sorrell & Hoad). In 1940 in Sydney Fred remarried to Frances (Beth) Elizabeth Kitley (b1907 in Stockton, New South Wales) - Beth was a Nurse. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Fred and Beth settled in Sydney where Fred was a Business Manager and Estate Agent. Fred died in 1987 and Beth in 1990.
