Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Leading Aircraftman John Dalton Lidbury (Service No:442009) enlisted in the Air Training Corps (ATC) 5 Wing HQ on 8 December 1942 and enlisted in the RAAF on 25 March 1944 at No 4 Recruiting Centre Perth as an Aircraftman II. LAC Lidbury served with 14 Stores Unit and was attached to 1 Engineering School at Discharge on 21 December 1945.

Born in 1926 in Perth WA, John was the second child of Frank Read Lidbury (b1884 in London, England) and Ethel Florence Cook (b1895 in Kent, England). Frank had worked as a Warehouseman in London before serving with the Royal Artillery (Gunner; Regimental No:26292) and immigrating around 1911 to join younger brother farming at Donnelly River via Manjimup. Frank (a Mechanic) and Ethel (a Servant) married in 1916 at Blackwood, WA - Ethel was a Nursemaid when she immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle on board the Belgic. Frank served in the Air Flying Corps in WWI (Service No:754) and he and Ethel then settled in Perth, where Frank worked as a Mechanic and Salesman.

John started work as a Junior Clerk with the Tax Office and was with Eagle Star Insurance Co in 1942 when he joined the Air Training Corps. Following his Discharge from the RAAF in 1945, John completed  Architecture qualifications at Perth Technical College, and in 1952 was awarded the WH Robertson Memorial Travel Grant, enabling him to travel and work in England. Frank joined Hobbs, Winning and Leighton Architects - later being made a Partner. In 1964 in Perth, John married Fleta Margaret Nattrass (a Physiotherapist in Perth) and the couple settled in Perth where they raised their family. John was involved in sailing (member of Claremont Yacht Club and Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club) and was a councillor of the WA Chapter of the Royal Australian Institue of Architects (RAIA) and made a Fellow of the RAIA in 1966. He was a Peppermint Grove Shire Councillor (1971 to 1995) and President (1990 to 1995), and retired as Senior Director at Hobbs, Winning and Leighton in 1991. John died in 2016.
