William Henry Etherington was believed to be born in 1871 in Wimbledon England. William H. Etherington was a painter before enlisting to the army and he also had a wife and two children.

William H. Etherington applied for the army in Melbourne and was accepted into the army on the 20th of October 1914. When William H. Etherington joined the army, he was a private in the 9th Light Horse Regiment but later he was moved to help the 33rd Australian Infantry Battalion. He fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. In late April 1915 he was hospitalised and transferred between several hospitals due to influenza, On the 3rd of July 1916 William H. Etherington suffered a back injury and was in the hospital for around 2 and a half months before returning to the army in 18th of September 1916.

William Henry Etherington was discharged from the army and was transported back to Australia on the 31st of October 1917. He died 18th June 1954 and he is buried at West Terrace Cemetery. In 1919 William H. Etherington earned 3 medals the 1914/15 Star Medal, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal however because of his passing they were passed on to his wife Mrs Emma M. A. Etherington.
