Tom & Marie
Marie said that it was Toms sense of humour is what 1st caught her attention. Their engagement was a bit unorthodox. Tom worked in a bike shop next door to the jewellers & so when the time came to propose, he had George Porter bring around a tray of engagement rings. “(George) left them in the back workshop amongst the grease & tools” Tom explained “& Marie came back from school or wherever she was & picked the ring. You wouldn’t do it today” he said. The pair remember how, on 25th March, 1950 on the day of their wedding, the roads had been cut by “monstrous floods”, which meant the guest’s coming from Proserpine had to travel by train to attend. They honeymooned up north, before returning to Proserpine & settling into married life.
The built their home on Marathon Street & remained their raising 4 boys & navigating whatever challenges came their way.
