Biography contributed by Ross Martin

Cec Weatherby was born in Yass, NSW in 1898 and was working as a motorcycle mechanic when he enlisted in April 1916.

He left Sydney on 11 July 1916 aboard the HMAT Vestalia as part of the 53rd Battalion.

On 1st September 1918 during fighting near Peronne, Cec was awarded the DCM for conspicuous gallantry for capturing, then using an enemy field gun.

Cec was wounded during this fighting and after a time in UK hospitals he was evacuated back to Australia.

Cec returned to repairing cars and motorcycles, and in the early 1920's he opened a repair shop in Ashfield, NSW.

He started to compete in motorcycle race meetings and was successful in winning races.

In 1928 he set the Melbourne to Sydney record on a motorcycle and sidecar, the time being 14 hours 35 minutes.

In 1929 he lowered this time to 13 hours 31 minutes.

In 1933 Cec sailed to the UK and competed in the Isle of Man TT races. He finished 15th in the Lightweight event, but fell in the Senior TT suffering minor injuries. Returning to Australia he competed in local and interstate events . In 1935, at Bathurst he won the Junior GP on a Velocette machine.

When WW2 started Cec volunteered for service and and served in various Army Field Workshops for the duration. He was discharged in 1948 with the rank of WO2.

An eventful life.
