William Richard Stalley, known as Bill, was born in Gympie Queensland, and attended Gympie State School. He completed his apprenticeship in Bootmaking and Repairing with the firm E. Bytheway & Son in Mary Street Gympie.
Bill went into partnership, opening a bootmaking and repair store known as Stalley & Router.
On 25 September 1937 at the age of 25 he married 22 year old Winifred Athol Rutkin, the daughter of a well known hairdressing family, also in Mary Street Gympie.
Following his enlistment in the RAAF during WW2 Bill spent time training as a Nursing and Medical Orderly in Laverton Victoria, as well as significant time in Maryborough and Townsville in Queensland.
In early 1944 Bill was sent to New Guinea with 100 Squadron, serving as a Medical Orderly at Goodenough Island, Nadzab and Tadji.
Bill was discharged from the RAAF on compassionate grounds, because his business partner was medically unfit to continue running the shop in Bill's absence.
Bill and his wife Winnie had three daughters, and in addition to running his shoe shop in Mary Street, Bill was also an alderman in Gympie Council for a number of years.
He died at the age of 76 and was buried in Gympie Cemetery.
