Gordon was the youngest of six children of Francis (Frank) Herbert McLean (born 1889 in Matyborough, QLD) and Martha Isabella Butler (born 1886 in Gympie, QLD). Frank - a Fireman - and Martha married in 1909 in Gympie, QLD where they settled before moving to Maryborough in 1922. Frank worked as a Fireman.

Gordon enlisted in the RAAF (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:79301) in October 1942 and was attached to 3 Medical Rhabilitation Unit when he was Discharged in January 1946. Brother Francis  (Private; Service No:Q42190) also served in WWII.

Gordon returned to Maryborough, QLD where he was an apprentice Machinist in 1949, before being Licensee of the Balmoral Hotel in Rockhampton, QLD (1950). In 1952 Gordon married Ivy Mae Stafford (born 1932 in Rockhampton, QLD). Gordon and Ivy settled at Brovinia via Mundubbera, QLD where Gordon was a Salesman before moving to Fitzroy in 1963, where Gordon was a Store Manager. By 1968 Gordon and Ivy had relocated to Maryborough, QLD where Gordon was a Timber Orderman. They divorced and by 1970 Ivy had remarried and settled in Brisbane, QLD. Gordon remained in Maryborough, QLD where he worked as a Timber Orderman. By 1990 he had relocated to Caboolture, QLD where he married Dorothy Milschewski. Gordon died in 1999 and Dorothy in 2006.
