Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

79 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 6th July 1945, Sergeant William Davies, 5th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-8805), stain glass artist from 17 Greenbank Street, Marrickville, New South Wales and Charlestown, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 55. ANGLICAN 3-170. 21.

Born at Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom about April 1890 to George and ? Davies from Whallen Street, Salford, England, Will enlisted on the 7th August 1915 with the 2nd Australian Divisional Ammunition Column at Holsworthy, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A39 Port Macquarie on the 16th November 1915.

Admitted to hospital 31.8.1916 (bronchopneumonia).

Embarked for England 5.9.1916.

Granted furlough from 13.11.1916 to 28.11.1916.

Commenced return to Australia 1.11.1917.

Will arrived home on the 3th January 1918, being discharged medically unfit (bronchopneumonia) on the 7th February 1918.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Davies’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Marrickville War Memorial.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
