Born in Jhansi, India in 1914, Lawrence was the youngest of six children of Albert Edward Flatman (b1872 in Hampshire, England) and Mabel Isadora Ensell (b1883 in Bengal, India). Albert (a Soldier) married Mabel in 1904 in Jhansi, India where they settled and raised their family. Albert was a Carpenter in 1891 when he enlisted in the Royal Artillery (Regimental No:85259) and served as a Wheeler Staff Sergeant. Both Mabel (1920) and Albert (1925) died in India.

In 1930 Lawrence arrived in Fremantle WA on board the Jarvis Bay, following older brother Charles who had arrived in 1928 as a student. Lawrence had stated his occupation as 'Farming'. In 1936 Lawrence married Ellen (Nell) Olive Payne (b1917 in Perth WA) and enlisted in the RAAF in May 1940. Lawrence was a Flight Lieutenant (Service No:296756) attached to 11 Group HQ when he was Discharged in January 1946.

Lawrence and Nell were Divorced in 1946 and in 1947 Lawrence remarried to Clara Martha Reid (nee Sporer; b1913 in Perth WA) - Clara was a Dressmaker. Lawrence and Clara settled in South Perth where Lawrence worked as a Storeman and Clara a Dressmaker.  Lawrence died in 1983 and Clara in 2007.
