One of three brothers who served in WWII, Leading Aircraftman Arthur Valentine Brunner (Service No:123652) enlisted in the RAAF on 9 February 1943 at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane as an Aircraftman 1 - mustered as General Hand. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 9 August 1943, LAC Brunner served in New Guinea with 41 Operational Base Unit (OBU) on Goodenough Island, No 7 Transport and Movement Office (T & M) in Milne Bay, and 89 OBU at Biak in Madang in 1943/1945. LAC Brunner was attached to 89 OBU at Discharge on 22 January 1946.

Art was born in Toowoomba, QLD in 1911, tenth of twelve children of Frederick Brunner (b1868 at Middle Ridge, Toowoomba, QLD) and Friederica Wilhelmine Flegler (b1873 at Middle Ridge, Toowoomba, QLD). Frederick was a licensed Firewood Cutter and Labourer in 1892 when he and Friederica married in Toowoomba, where they settled and raised their family and Frederick worked as a Labourer.

Art worked as a Labourer and Truck Driver in Toowoomba, where in 1942 he married Ellen Mavis Sherringham (b1910 in Annandale, New South Wales) - Ellen worked in Toowoomba as a Dance Teacher. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Art and Ellen settled in Toowoomba, where they raised their family and Art worked as a Carter/Truck Driver. Ellen died in 1994 and Art in 2002.
