Sergeant James Richard Winnett (Service No:38224) enlisted in the RAAF on 19 March 1941 as an Aircraftman I (Trainee WT Operator) - he had been serving in the Militia (Army Service Corps.). Sergeant Winnett completed Signal School Pt Cook in November 1941 and on 12 June 1942 was a Wireless Operator Mechanic posted in Batchelor NT. Sergeant Winnett served with 34 Squadron, 53 Operational Base Unit and RAAF Station Pearce and was attached to 76 Operational Base Unit at Discharge on 16 November 1945.

Born in 1920 in Fremantle WA, James was the second of seven children of John Mayberry Winnett (b1892 in Clunes, Victoria) and Sarah (Sadie) Marian Hicks (b1895 in Fremantle WA. John (a Clerk) and Sadie married in 1916 in Fremantle WA. John served in WWI (Private; Service No:3225) and WWII (Staff Sergeant; Wi7259) and he and Sadie lived in Perth WA where John was a Clerk and after WWII in Albany WA where John was Assistant Town Clerk.

James was a Clerk in Perth WA, studying Accountancy when he enlisted in the RAAF. In 1944 James married Doris Evelyn Carter (b1923 in Perth WA). Following his Discharge, James completed Accountancy studies and he and Doris settled in Perth WA where James was an Accountant. Doris died in 1981 and James in 1995.
