Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Clive was the seventeenth of eighteen children of John Godfrey Johnson (b1848 in Bolivia, NSW) and Ellen Folwell (b1859 in Stawell, Victoria). John (a Labourer) and Ellen married in Heathcote, Victoria in 1875, and lived in Victoria and NSW before moving their family to WA in the early 1890s. Initially John worked in Perth as a Labourer before becoming a Farmer in Darkan WA. Family anecdote is that John was born in Bolivia, South America - his parents were sponsored as Assisted Immigrants from England, arriving in NSW in 1841 on board the Brothers. They lived in Bolivia NSW before following the goldrushes to Victoria and WA.

Clive worked as a Yardman and Waiter at Kulin Hotel, and was a Shearer and Shearer's Cook. In 1931 in Midland Junction, WA married Flora McDonald (b1909 in Lancashire, England) - Flora arrived in Fremantle WA on board the Ajana with her parents in 1912. Clive and Flora settled in Midland Junction where Clive was a Truck Owner/Driver and Quarryman in July 1941 when he enlisted in the RAAF (Service No:45321). He was described as 'A willing type ... well dressed, a good clean type' (National Archives Australia). Clive was an Aircraftman 1, promoted to Leading Aircraftman in April 1942 and served as a Messman and Cook attached to 25 Squadron, 5 Personnel Depot and 76 Operational Base Unit. In 1944 he sought Discharge, writing 'My reason for application for discharge is that I should be doing more for the War effort in my previous occupation, than in the category that I am now serving. WAAF are now employed in the same mustering as myself and are more suitable in my estimation than RAAF, in this particular mustering. I also class myself as a specialist in my previous employment ...' (National Archives Australia. Clive was Discharged in March 1945.

Clive and Flora remained in Midland Junction, where Clive worked as a Machinist and Tarpaulin Maker before moving to Helena Valley, WA. Clive died in 1964 and Flora in 2009.
