Frank left Adelaide on the Benalla on 27 October 1915 and transferred to the 50th Battalion on 26 February 1916. He served with the 4th Division Artillery at Serapeum, Egypt from 19 April. Frank was sent to France with his unit on 13 June. He was wounded in action in Belgium on 27 October 1917 sustaining being gassed and wounds to the nose and left hand / elbow. Frank was sent to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, England for treatment on 30 October. Further hospitalisation was necessary due to scabies and cellulitis in May 1918. He returned to Australia on board the Saxon on 11 December and discharged as medically unfit on 31 March 1919.
