Henry was the third of four children of James Tregellis Smart (b1883 in Ararat, Victoria) and Harriet Elizabeth Paynter (b1865 in Ampitheatre, Victoria). James - a Labourer - and Harriet married in 1908 in Ararat, Victoria where they raised their family.

Henry was a Labourer in Ararat, Victoria when he enlisted in the Militia in 1934. He served with 6th Infantry Battalion (Private (Service No:290852) until December 1939. In October 1942 Henry enlisted in the RAAF (Aircraftman II; Service No:428266). He served in India (21 March 1945 - 29 June 1945) and Burma (9 July 1945 - 12 December 1945), flying more than 24 operational sorties. He was a Flying Officer attached to 267 Squadron when he was Discharged in February 1946. Brothers Harold James and Leslie also served in WWII, as did cousin Mervyn Goulbourne Smart.

In 1938 Henry married Hazel Rose Guy (b1920 in Brunswick, Melbourne). Henry and Hazel settled in Melbourne, where Henry worked as a Fitter. Henry died in 1998 and Hazel died in 2006
