Leading Aircraftman James William Garlick (Service No:53790) enlisted in the RAAF on 10 April 1942 at No 1 Recruiting centre melbourne as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Electrician, later remustered as Guard - he was described in his Attestation Papers (NAA) as 'sober honest and respectable. A very good type of youth'. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 12 January 1943, he served in New Guinea (3 February 1943 - 30 July 1944) and Morotai (15 June 1945 - 9 December 1945) and was attached to No 6 Mobile Works Squadron and AD HQ Morotai. LAC Garlick was atatched to 60 Operational Base Unit (OBU) at Discharge on 22 January 1946.
James was born in Mornington, Victoria in 1923, second of four children of William (Jim) James Garlick (b1887 at Snapper Point (Mornington), Victoria) and Laura Frances Pearson (b1896 in Lefroy, Tasmania). Jim worked as a Labourer in Mornington and Furnaceman in Melbourne before enlisting in the AIF in 1916. Following his Discharge, he and Laura married in Melbourne in 1921 and settled in Mornington, where they raised their family and Jim worked as a Labourer and Fisherman.
James had served three and half years of his Electircal Apprenticehip with HC Bean, and was member of the Country Fire Brigade when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. Following his Discharge, Jim married June Mabel Conquit (b1924 in Melbourne, Victoria) in 1947. James and June settled in Mornington, where they raised their family and James worked as an Electrical Mechanic, Carpenter and Builder and was a member of the Volunteer Fire Brigade. Jame died in 2004.
