Leading Aircraftman Hugh Sherman (Service No:50894) enlisted in the RAAF at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne on 17 February 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Guard - described in his Application Interview (NAA) as 'a hardy type, respectful'. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 17 August 1942, he served with 2 Medical Receiving Station (MRS) at Milne Bay and Madang from 1 May 1944 to 5 September 1945. LAC Sherman was attached to 2 MRS at Discharge on 11 December 1945.

Hughie was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1911, youngest of four children of William (Bill) James Sherman (b1873 in Mansfield, Victoria) and his first wife Emma Alice Hallows (b1878 in Melbourne, Victoria). Bill (a Labourer) and Emma married in Melbourne in 1910, where they settled and raised their children and Bill was a Labourer. Following Emma's death in 1915, Bill remarried in 1923 and had another three children. His second wife died in 1928, and Bill moved to Moulamein, NSW in the early 1930s, where he remarried and worked as a Labourer.

Hughie worked in the Riverina District in NSW - at Moama as a Labourer in the ealry 1930s and at Nyanga Station via Moulamein in the mid 1930s. In 1936 in Moulamien, Hughie married Ruby Lillian Bowden (b1911 in Balranald, NSW). Hughie and Ruby lived in Moulamein and Balranald, where they raised their family and Hughie was a Labourer until his death in 1978. Ruby died in 1994.
