Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Flight Lieutenant Peter Arthur Haynes (Service No:406039) enlisted in the RAAF on 25 May 1940 and was mustered as a Wirless Operator and Gunner attached to No 1 Wireless and Gunners' School (WAGS) Ballarat. Seconded to the RAF in the Middle East (11 February 1941 - 23 April 1942) ACII Haynes was appointed to a commission on 1 October 1942 (Pilot Officer, Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant). In March 1944 he was seconded to the USAF, and served in New Guinea and Darwin with 25 and 350 Squadrons. In March/April 1944 he was seconded again to the RAF, serving with 34 Squadron in Singapore and Sumatra and 84 Squadron in Java. Flight Lieutenant Haynes was attached to 7 Operational Training Unit (OTU) at Discharge on 20 July 1945.

Peter was born in 1918 in Broome WA, the third of six children of Dr Arthur Richard Haynes (b1888 in Gunnedah, NSW) and his first wife Irene Maria Frost (b1890 in Orange, NSW). Arthur took over his father's medical practice in 1910 in Perth, WA and served in WWI (Captain, AAMC). Arthur and Irene married in Perth in 1914 and settled in Broome in 1917 when Arthur was appointed District Medical Officer and on occasion as Resident Magistrate. Irene was on holiday in Perth in 1928 when she died as a result of burns suffered in an accident. Eldest daughter Sheila went to live with an Aunt and Uncle in Hong Kong (where she was interred at Stanley Camp during WWII) and the younger children were raised by their grandparents. Arthur was in Mt Magnet, WA in 1945 when he remarried.

Peter was ten years of age when his mother died. He completed business studies at City Commercial College and was working as an Audit Clerk in Perth when he enlisted in the RAAF. In 1942 in Perth, WA he married Nita (Jean) Kennedy (b1917 in Fremantle, WA). Following his Discharge, Peter and Jean lived in Perth before settling in Broome, WA in the late 1940s. Peter worked as a Clerk, and in the 1980 New Year's Honours List was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) 'for services to the community' (Trove). Jean died in September 2002 and Peter in November of that year.
