Elder of two brothers (Ken and Ed) who served in WWII, Leading Aircraftman Kenneth William Shumack (Service No:21878) enlisted in the RAAF at No 2 Recruiting Centre Sydney as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Rigger, re mustered as Rigger and then as Fitter. His application to enlist in 1940 was deferred - his father was seriously ill and he was required to manage the family farm. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 20 October 1942, LAC Shumack served with 76 Squadron, and was attached to 2 Operational Training Unit (OTU) at Discharge on 23 November 1945.
Ken was born in Dubbo, New South Wales in 1911, eldest of seven children of Robert (Bob) Aubrey Shumack (b1877 in Bathurst, New South Wales) and Margaret (Maggie) Jane McCulloch (b1899 in Tumut, New South Wales). Bob was a Farmer at Narromine via Castlereagh, and in 1910 he and Maggie married in Tumut. The couple settled at Mogriguy via Castlereagh, where they raised their family and Bob was a Farmer - he served as Secretary of the Farmers and Settlers Association.
Ken was a Farm Labourer in Mogriguy, and was Secretary of the Moriguy Cricket Club. In 1941 he enlisted in the RAAF, and in Melbourne in 1943 married Ivy Jessie Burdon (b1913 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Ivy was serving in the WAAAF (Service No:93092). Following Discharge, Ken and Ivy settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Ken worked as a Labourer and Timber Worker. In 1957 he joined the Public Service, and was a Lineman with the Postmaster General's Department until retirement. Ivy died in 1988 and Ken in 1996.
