Roy Campbell Holm was born in Fremantle on the 6.6.1897. His siblings were Flora, Charles, Louisa and Alexander. He had 5 years previous service in the cadets and was a farmhand (Teamster) and Presbyterian when he enlisted in Fremantle on the 1.7.1916. He was 19 years old and his next of kin was his father, Stewart Holm of John St, North Fremantle. His mother had died on the 8th of June, only a month previously. Elizabeth Amelia Holm (née Flett) had resided in WA for 23 years and the Rev Robert Hanlin conducted her funeral. Wreaths were placed on the grave by the North Fremantle Soldiers’ Comforts Committee, the Fremantle Ladies’ Rowing Club, employees of the Railway Stores department, D and J Fowler and the WA Brushware Company.
Roy was described as being 5 feet 5½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 32 – 35 inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He was a Private with Service Number 2837, allocated to the 44th Infantry Battalion. He embarked at Fremantle on the 29.12.16 on A34 Persic and disembarked in Devonport on 3.3.17. On 17.3.17, he was admitted to hospital with influenza and went AWL from 31.5.17 to 4.6.17. Roy was wounded in action in France on 20.10.17, with a gunshot wound to his back and the effects of being gassed. After recuperation in Norfolk War Hospital, he returned to France on the 2.3.18 and was wounded for the second time on the 4.7.18. He rejoined his unit on the 26.8.18.
Roy returned to Australia on the 1.7.19 on the Karmala. He disembarked on the 10.8.19 and was discharged on the 15.9.19. Roy married Edith Bessie Brown in 1931 in Fremantle, and they had three children. He died on the 15.11.1982, aged 85, at Hamilton Hill and is memorialised at Fremantle Cemetery Crematorium Garden A9 Position 0012.
