One of three brothers (Fred and Norman) who served in WWII, Leading Aircraftman Leonard Albert Kurz (Service No:429390) served in the Militia as a Private with 31st Battalion (1933 - 1936), and enlisted in the RAAF at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane on 14 September 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Telegraphist. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 18 December 1943, LAC Kurz was attached to 8 Operational Training Unit (OTU) at Discharge on 7 December 1945.

Len was the second of four children of Fritz Gottlieb Kurz (b1874 in Germany) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Mary Golder (b1889 in London, England). In 1917 Fritz was arrested in Herberton as an 'enemy alien' and interned in Brisbane - his business and property were sold (Trove). Fritz returned to Germany, and followng his death Lizzie remarried in the 1920s.

Len worked as a Salesman in Cairns, and in 1939 married Mona Patricia McFarland (b1917 at Peak Hill via Parkes, New South Wales). In 1941 Len and Mona moved to Brisbane, where they raised their family and Len was a Salesman when he enlisted in the RAAF. Following his Discharge, Len and Mona returned to North QLD - Babinda via Gordonvale and Atherton before settling in Cairns in the late 1950s. Len was a Salesman and served as Secretary of the Innisfail Sub Branch of the RSL. In the 1960s Len and Mona settled in Brisbane, where Len was a Salesman and Manager until retirement.
