Kenneth was a strong, free spirited young man when he left London to see the world, and work as a farm labourer in Australia. The atrocoities, harshness and conditions of WW1 deeply affected him. A further battle in France resulted in the Batalion being exposed to mustard gas. Once again he was treated in a London Hospital, but this time and he went AWOL and headed to Scotland to see his family. Within days the Military Police returned him forcefully to the front line where he completed his service duty on the 27th November 1918.
He returned to Australia, married Amelia Bausman 1919 and lived in Fitzroy. They had four children Elsie,Kenneth Alfred and Frederick. He worked for the Tramways Board Preston as a tram driver was an avid gardener and jack of all trades. He drank too much Scotch and was often frustrated and angry with life.Clearly he had been affected by his experiences in WW1.
