Leading Aircraftman Vernon Stanley Blume (Service No:53981) enlisted in the RAAF on 16 April 1942 at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Flight Mechanic and remustered as Fitter. During 1942 ACI Blume was attached to No 4 School of Technical Training (STT) Adelaide, No 1 Engineering School (ES) Ascot Vale and No 1 Air Obervers School (AOS) Cootamundra. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman in 1943, he served in the Northern Territory with 55 Operational Base Unit (OBU) Birdum and No 2 (Transport) Squadron. In 1944 LAC Blume was posted to No 7 Operational Training Unit (OTU) Tocumwal and was Discharged on 18 December 1945.
Vern was born at Barker's Creek via Castlemaine, Victoria in 1922, youngest of four children of Colin Stanley Blume (b1890 in Beechworth, Victoria) and Daisy Evelyn Maddern (b1894 in Castlemaine, Victoria). Colin was a Carter in 1914 when he and Daisy married at Barker's Creek, where they settled and raised their family and Colin was a Carter.
Vern was an Apprentice Mason with Ferries' Monumental and Building Masons in Barker's Creek when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. He was described by his employer as an 'intelligent, trustworthy and honest young man' (NAA). Following his Discharge, Vern returned to Barker's Creek where he completed his Apprenticeship and was working as a Monumental Mason in 1951 when he married Betty Margaret Mein (b1927 in Castlemaine, Victoria) - Betty was working in Castlemaine as a Typist. Vern and Betty settled in Castlemaine where they raised their family and Vern worked as a Monumental Mason and Storeman. Vern died in 1971and Betty in 2006.
